A Review of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Wound Healing

|
Oxygen is a prerequisite for successful wound healing due to increased demand for every step of wound healing process: fibroblast growth, collagen synthesis and angiogenesis. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been successfully used as adjunctive therapy for wound which exists oxygen deficiency. Indications of particular interest to the plastic surgeon include non-healing wound, infected wound, compromised skin grafts and flaps, thermal burn and radiation induced wound. The authors present a review of the literature regarding the rationale behind the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, its clinical applications and complications. A review of the literature through PubMed was done using the keywords “hyperbaric oxygen therapy” AND “wound healing”. The majority of the literatures are well supported that adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an effective method to difficult wound healing. Further experimentation and study for clinical effectiveness are certainly warranted. Despite this need for further study, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is currently offer safe, effective and noninvasive adjunct treatment to selective non healing wounds.
